A complete waste of money like all the schemes Leeds City Council seem to come up with these days. It is about time that LCC listen to residents, take in to account the thoughts of residents , not that they do listen, and do not keep messing around with thinks that work and restrict flow of traffic.

I like the concept and approve of the aim of removing through -traffic from City Square but am disappointed that nothing is proposed to improve the very poor provision for drop off and pick up at the station. Princes Square is totally inadequate for the purpose. Much more kerb space is required. Could this be provided on Wellington Street or Aire street ( with traffic able to turn right from the east end of Wellington street into Aire street?). Also access to/from the station from the eastern parts of Leeds will be off-putting

In my experience, congestion in city square itself is not a major problem for buses. The main issue for bus users is rather the location of bus stops.

What do you think of our proposals for bus improvements?

Okay

Please explain your answer in the space below

As noted in my general comments, I like the overall concept but think that access to the station by car to drop -off or pick up passengers will remain poor and, for people whose journeys start or end to the east of Leeds city centre, will deteriorate. This will discourage people from using rail services and thus lead to additional car miles.

What do you think of our proposals for changes to traffic movements?

Poor

Please provide us with any other comments or suggestions you have on the overall proposals using the space below

There is a need for improved facilities for drop off and pick up at the station - particularly for more kerb space. I suggest that this might be provided on Wellington street and Aire street and that it would be useful to allow a right turn from the east end of Wellington street into Aire Street thus allowing a clockwise circulation via Thirsk Row, Wellington street and Aire street ( all of which could be one way).

"The Glade" design is fantastic. It looks very impressive, very mature and very high quality. The traffic proposals are a real mess though. The cycle lanes, while important, really need a re-think. As as cyclist, I wouldn't bother using these - I'd just use the road. They start and stop at random points with no clear connection and intersect with extremelly high pedestrian traffic areas. Not only that but the bright green is an eyesore, clashing with the bright red chosen for the dropped curb. I understand it's common to have increased contrast on the dropped curb surface but many cities manage to do this without using ghastly colours (see London). Generally otherwise the proposals are fine. I'm supportive of removing traffic from this area. The air quality on neville street is atrocious.

Please explain your answers in the space below:

I think these proposals, particularly the area around bishopgate street meeting city square are going to result in a very poor experience for cyclists, pedestrians and disabled people who all meet in a very tight space. If cyclists use the cycle lane going up bishopgate, I guarantee you'll see collisions with pedestrians given the large numbers who cross the road here heading to and from the station.

The cycle lanes around city square are very poor. As a cyclist I'd rather ride on the road than risk pedestrian collisions on random bits of disjointed cycle path. I'd be really worried to use the cycle path around the end of bishopgate street where it intersects with the pedestrian area and gives pedestrians, wheelchair users, disabled/blind people very little room to navigate.

What do you think about our proposals for cycling improvements?

Very poor

Please explain your answer in the space below:

Generally the glade area is fantastic. I love the design, I love the layout and I think it'll make a massive improvement to making city square somewhere that the people of Leeds can spend time rather than it's current dirty, under-used state. As mentioned, the cycle lanes are my only real problem as I think they create a dangerous envrionment for pedestrians in their suggested form.

Please explain your answer in the space below:

These proposals will cost a lot of money at a time when we keep getting told there aren’t enough resources to go around. Having walked around that area people don’t use it other than to got to other places. Moving the traffic out to already congested roads especially during peak times will not help Leeds as a whole. Expecting public transport to take over is impractical, where I live you can’t get a seat on a bus in town but by the time it gets here it’s virtually empty. I can’t see what benefit this will bring and to try and justify it by using HS2 which hasn’t even been started yet is wrong.

Please explain your answers in the space below:

These proposals suit more a city that gets better weather than us. That area is a wind trap and when it’s raining I wouldn’t want to spend time hanging around there.

Clearly the current system is unpleasant, creates congestion and pollution and therefore improvements are urgently needed. Please look at the Wellington Street, Queen Street, Northern St. junction. A lot of the current congestion and delays to buses results from insufficient time for traffic travelling west on Wellington Street and too much time for Queen St.

The video suggests the loading bay on King Street (between Wellington Street and Back York Place) will be removed. Since the creation of the cycle lanes on Wellington Street with the raised concrete dividing them from the traffic, it has been impossible for vehicles to stop for deliveries except in the loading bay on King Street. Therefore, the loading bay is essential for local residents and we cannot afford to lose it.

The only issue I have is the extra distance to get to taxis and buses. This isn't a big issue for me currently, but for people with mobility difficulties it will be.

Please explain your answers in the space below:

The car pick up from the station is inadequate (partly because hire cars necessarily? wait there for passengers from trains). But the intention of the scheme is to dissuade cars from coming into the City Centre, except when essential. As to taxis, I don't know what will replace the current waiting area in New Station Street.

Please explain your answer in the space below:

There should be cycle lanes to and in the station forecourt. Using New Station Street to access the station may be difficult at times of maximum congestion.

Please explain your answers in the space below:

Less traffic will improve the pedestrian experience; the segregated cycleways should improve the cyclist experience, however, the cyclist experience as a whole still really needs looking at, to ensure the cycleways join up - the cycleways on the pavement which don't link into other cycle routes and don't give clear right could be quite dangerous.

In theory, the segregated cycleways should improve the cyclist experience, however, the cyclist experience as a whole in Leeds still really needs looking at, to ensure the cycleways join up for example - the cycleways on the pavement which don't link into other cycle routes and don't give clear right of way could be quite dangerous. We should be following best practice. For example, looking at other European countries/cities such as Amsterdam & Copenhagen, which have done this well. There is too much 'piecemeal' cycle lanes in Leeds, which are not clear, don't join up, and are often dangerous (from personal experience!). We need a holistic cycling strategy for Leeds

You're building all of these 'segregated' cycle lanes but all mixed in with pedestrians - the green ones are at least more obviously cycle lanes but the ones along the headway and up past the Light are basically full of pedestrians all of the time - especially when they run up against bus stops. You have to give cyclists routes that are truly segregated both from cars and pedestrians. After all the work you've done, I still don't have a convenient and safe cycle route from my home in Leeds dock to my work at the top of the University campus near Woodhoour moor.

The reduction in cars will make it safer and reduce pollution, the cycle lanes, especially those which from the proposal seem very short and interrupted by junctions will make it difficult to cycle through city square and more dangerous for cyclists and pedestrians alike, the right of way of the cycle routes needs to be clear for all users of city square.

Please explain your answers in the space below:

The extra space will help pedestrians, the pavements get very busy but I am concerned about the short and discontinuous cycle lanes and whether these will make cycling more dangerous to pedestrians and cyclists as the rights of way are not clear. Leeds council has a tendency to draw up plans that look nice in artists' impressions but aren't very practical once implemented

Please explain your answers in the space below:

Walking: these proposals are not good for someone with mobility problems or simply carrying luggage. The proposed closure of New Station Street means they will no longer have flat access to the station but will have to negotiate a flight of steps. Taxi: dreadful. The drop off point on Princes Square is already overloaded. This will make it worse. The plans also remove the taxi point outside the Queen's Hotel. Motorcycle: this depends on whether they will be allowed to use the bus lanes and bus gate, as stipulated in the WYCA transport plan. If not, it will change a quick journey to and from the motorcycle parking on Russell St into an extended quest around most of the centre of town

Wand orcas used to separate cycle lanes were installed last year without any risk or safety assessment. They are a trip hazard for pedestrians and make it harder for non-traditional pedal cycles such as tricycles or cargo bikes to use the lanes. I've have spoken to cyclists who feel uncomfortable trying to cycle past them

What do you think about our proposals for cycling improvements?

Please explain your answer in the space below:

I know there's an ulterior motive to get people walking further as a public health measure. However this fails to take into account people with mobility problems, people using prams and pushchairs, or simply carrying heavy shopping. I'd be very interested to see an Equality Act assessment of this scheme

What do you think of our proposals for pedestrian improvements?

Very poor

Please explain your answer in the space below

Bus use has been in decline for years. Attempts to encourage modal shift or influence travel behaviour through bus priority measures have not worked. I would expect contingency plans if this decline continues. The bus gate on East Parade cuts off direct access to the Headrow and the inner city loop. It also does not take into account motorcycles leaving the parking on Russell St and wanting to turn right on to the Headrow

What do you think of our proposals for bus improvements?

Very poor

Please explain your answer in the space below

This is clearly the first step in removing powered personal transport from the city centre entirely. However "encouraging" traffic using the M621 to use either J2 or J4 instead of J3 moves it from commercial areas on Meadow Lane and relocates it to the more residential areas of Holbeck and Hunslet. It might reduce city centre pollution but it just moves it to these areas instead. In line with the WYCA transport strategy I will expect motorcycles to be allowed access to the car-free areas. Leeds has said they want it to be somewhere where you don't need a car, but some people need cars because they cannot cycle or use buses

Please explain your answer in the space below:

I feel this is a decisive move away from the urban planning mistakes of the past. City Square is an important public space and gateway to the city, and is currently blighted by high levels of motor traffic. The historical road layout encourages conflict and aggression at crossings, and does not reflect the vastly increased number of pedestrian and cycle movements compared to even 10-20 years ago.

Please explain your answers in the space below:

The plans seem explicitly designed to reduce the permeability of the city centre to private motor traffic, which must be a good thing. Far too much through traffic uses the Bishopgate / City Square route out of habit instead of using the inner ring road or another outer route.

The legibility of the proposed cycle lanes is quite poor. Despite some good innovation in recent years, the default design seems to be to fudge all crossings and junctions with 'shared space' which is confusing and a cause of needless conflict for both cyclists and pedestrians. Whilst in overall terms the city centre segregated routes are of good quality and the reallocation of space is very welcome, connections with routes that lead beyond the city centre is very poor. As an example of this, the designated route between Wellington Street and the CS1 superhighway at Armley Road is nothing short of appalling.

A welcome continuation of recent efforts to reallocate significant amounts of space to pedestrians.

Amongst other things, these proposals address the longstanding problems with the bus stops and congested pavement nearest the station on Wellington Street.

Absolutely the right thing to do.

What do you think of our proposals for changes to traffic movements?

Please provide us with any other comments or suggestions you have on the overall proposals using the space below

There are still significant issues with cars and vans parking on the footway in the city centre, albeit generally only for short periods of time. I think it is important that the design includes appropriate preventative measures to inhibit this. I am worried that the design of features such as the taxi rank on Quebec Street leads to a blurring of highway and footway boundaries.

Anything that can reduce the traffic in the city centre is good and better infrastructure for cycling is essential.

In the animation it looked like there were gaps between different sections of cycle lanes. Will there be anything put in place to try and keep pedestrians out of the cycle lanes?

Walking in the city centre currently/before the pandemic was horrible. lots of traffic and lots of people being herded into the same spaces. More room for everyone would be good.

What do you think of our proposals for pedestrian improvements?

Please explain your answer in the space below

Allowing the buses to move more freely will be a big benefit. There would need to be further improvements on other roads in the city centre to fully realise all the benefits but some change is definitely better than none.

What do you think of our proposals for bus improvements?

I'm not sure the inner ring road or the Armley gyratory can really cope with more traffic - they're horribly congested most of the time anyway.

Traffic entering the station via Princess Square needs much better management, especially given the very high number of taxis entering/exiting the station.
